- Facilitate Learning (56%): Knowledge of pregnancy and first stage of labor including current ACOG guidelines for prenatal exercise, recommended prenatal exercises for inclusion such as kegel, pelvic tilt and squatting, when to terminate exercise, pain management theories and application in labor including fear-tension-pain cycle, cognitive rehearsal, gate control theory, neuromatrix theory and endorphins, nonpharmacologic pain management strategies and techniques including positioning, heat/cold, hydrotherapy, counter pressure, double hip squeeze, side lunge, abdominal lift, acupressure and TENS with evidence-based guidelines and labor application, active relaxation methods including progressive relaxation, visualization, touch, selective relaxation and meditation with physiologic effects, emotional response, labor application and teaching guidelines, respiratory techniques including slow paced, normal paced, patterned and variable paced breathing with rationale, labor application and teaching guidelines; knowledge of second stage of labor including AWHONN practice guideline for second stage, open glottis, towel pull, positions and teaching guidelines; identify needs of the labor coach including role of the coach, coaching styles and motivating the coach as a learner.
- Implement Curriculum Assessment, Design and Evaluation (36%): Knowledge of principles of adult learning including Knowles process of teaching adults and characteristics and needs of the adult learner; phases of the group learning process; identify individual learning styles; use teaching strategies for the childbirth classroom; modify strategies and learning experiences based on learner needs including teens and diverse populations; teach a culturally competent childbirth class; understand steps of curriculum development including objectives, sequencing content, teaching plan and evaluation; use evidence-based practice to instruct learners; evaluate program design.
- Role of the Childbirth Educator (8%): Professional practice guidelines set by AWHONN; roles of the nurse childbirth educator including change agent, content expert and leader; knowledge of evidence-based practices related to childbirth education.
